ABSTRACT
··· Ledor Vador Foundation ···
Ledor Vador is an institution located in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, with 300 permanent residents and a unit for residents with temporary stays for rehabilitation or functional recovery. It has a surface area of 13,200 square meters distributed over three floors with 10 units. Furthermore, the residence has common areas located on the ground floor: café, temple, gardens, hair salon, physical therapy gym, main dining room, occupational therapy space, and library. It is an open-door institution, and the common areas are used by 1,200 people daily, including volunteers, interns from various educational institutions, family members, and healthcare workers. Residents are distributed among the
units according to care and social needs, based on a combination of variables such as: functionality, cognitive impairment, presence of behavioral issues, social skills, and medical complexity. Each unit has interdisciplinary teams comprised of nurses, doctors, nutritionists, psychologists, workshop leaders, and others. Occupational and physical therapy activities are conducted in the designated gym and space.
··· Ledor Vador Restraint Program ···
The program implemented at Ledor Vador began with an institutional decision, considering that the management, control, and elimination of restraints requires strategic commitment, as described in other experiences worldwide. Ledor Vador initiated a program to eliminate the use of physical restraints in 2016, convinced that eliminating them requires an organizational cultural change and a comprehensive training plan. This program has a direct impact on older adults and their families, people with disabilities or in dependent situations, healthcare professionals, and society at large.
We subscribe to a model that tends towards "Restraint-Free Care," defined as care where behavioral symptoms associated with cognitive impairment are addressed without the use of physical or chemical restrictive measures.
It consisted of training for healthcare staff and related sectors, covering topics such as the definition of physical and chemical restraint, alternative strategies to the use of restraints, non-pharmacological management of behavioral symptoms, strongly working on empathy, respect for autonomy and freedom as a right, moving from a care paradigm to a rights-based paradigm.
